In which Aoko meets Kaito?
Or someone who sure awfully looks a lot like him. What was it they said about karma again? Kaiao. Shinran. Here we go again.
sapphire & spade; Part of the shuffle the deck fic series; dcmk verse fics of rare encounters with the dcmk kids, while flirting loosely with canon. part character analysis, character interactions. much love for gosho’s couples.
Gong-gong
‘Oh no, Aoko’s going to be late!’
She breathes a panicked huff, still ruffling her hair to put it into some semblance of a nice chignon. Rather than anything elegant, she suspects that it probably resembled a bird’s nest. She tried to stem the tears she feels coming up. Aoko knew that this wasn’t like her, to be putting her hair up when she would just as comfortably let it flow loose. She remembered another time she acted like this – during her supposed ‘date’, but she could be forgiven for her nerves then considering that she was trying to prove her best friend’s innocence (ha, funny that).
Anyway, just as it was then, today was a special occasion. And just as it was then, it had something to do with Kaito.
Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Just there looking effortlessly cool wearing a dark jacket and slacks as he checked the time, stood her best friend. She blows away a strand of her hair in frustration. Kaito’s hair was as messy as hers, but why was it that on him it looked windswept rather than like her chaotic mess?
But her happiness overcomes her frustration and insecurity. It’s been a week since she saw Kaito last, something about taking time off work to guest star in a magic show in America. At least to herself, she can admit, she missed him. It was their anniversary – in more ways than one. Of when they met and many other new beginnings. He swore up and down it would be nothing like her near-disastrous birthday. He promised that he’d be there and on time. As the gong was about to strike twelve midnight, Aoko was as happy as she could remember ever feeling to see he kept his promise.
‘I swear, no more lies, Aoko.’
Except…
She slows to a stop in front of him.
“Aoko! Here you were making me promise to be on time, and you’re the one who was almost late. Good thing Cinderella didn’t turn into a pumpkin or anything like that,” he jokes with a wink.
His smile could blind her.
At the mention of Cinderella, she remembers a magical transformation and the warmth of his arms. But Kaito had never been her prince charming, rather he was the magical wizard who always did his best to grant her wishes.
Did his best…
Smile straining, she greets him, “Good evening, Kudo-san.”
At his honestly confused face, Aoko could very well applaud him. She could see that he inherited his mother’s skill.
“What are you talking about, Aoko?”
She breathes in and tries her best to be patient. “Kaito couldn’t make it, huh? I’m sorry you got roped into that idiot’s silliness, Kudo-san.”
“No, really,” he says, brows furrowed and looking utterly penitent, “What’re you talking about, Aoko? I am Kaito.” And as if to prove each and every one of her doubts wrong, a blooming rose still wet with dew appears in front of her face.
She would love to believe him, she really would, but Aoko’s had enough practice – and disappointments – in her life.
“Ok then. Aoko believes you,” she could have melted at his relieved expression, “So you’ll accept Aoko’s welcome home kiss, won’t you?” She clasps her hands behind her back and stands on her tip toes to draw her lips to his, closer and closer she draws and feels his breath intermingling with hers.
Just as she thinks they’re about to touch, a high-pitched noise makes her head ring just before she feels the softness of feathers caress her lips.
“That idiot…” she hears in Kaito’s voice, or something close to it. She’s impressed by the subtle shift. When before it had been laced with mischievous laughter, now it was smooth and mildly apologetic, “I’m really sorry about this, Aoko-chan.”
A slight shift in posture, a hand smoothing over his hair, and just like magic, instead of her best friend, there stood in front of her, one famous metantei.
Shinichi knew he shouldn’t have given in to Kuroba.
‘C’mon, Kudo, you owe me. Haven’t I dressed up as you enough times to save your butt?’
‘Yeah,’ he had replied while rolling his eyes, ‘Almost as many times as it caused me trouble.’
‘Onegai,’ Kuroba had pleaded, palms together. ‘Won’t you do your favorite cousin a solid?’
‘You’re my only cousin.’
‘Seriously, Shinichi,’ And he had looked serious, rare as that was, ‘I want to make this special for Aoko. Just think of it as practice for our body-switching trick for my next show.’
Shinichi had been ready to fall for it, before he sighed sufferingly, ‘Again, when did I ever agree to join –‘
‘Plus, if you do this for me, I promise I’ll get you a free three-night stay at the Ritz Carlton in New York. I got complimentary passes since I’m doing a show there. Isn’t your and Ran’s anniversary coming up?’
Damn it.
At the thought of Ran’s overjoyed and wonderstruck face, he decided not to listen to his brain for once. But looking at Aoko-chan trying to keep her smile up and herself strong had Shinichi rethinking this whole thing. No matter how happy Ran might be to spend their anniversary in New York, he’s sure she’d just as well get mad at him for putting one of her girl friends through the wringer. Again, he thinks with feeling, ‘That idiot…’
‘Why did I agree to this again?’
‘That’s no mystery. You pretend like you don’t care, Shinichi, but of course you do. I still remember how ‘Conan-kun’ helped Takagi-keiji out, and Kyougyoku-san too. As much as you say otherwise, of course you’d worry about Kuroba-san.’
‘At least I’m not as bad as you with Hattori and Kazuha-chan.’
‘Don’t fool yourself, Shinichi’, Ran had said laughing sweetly at him, ‘We both know you’re worse.’
Well, he’d agree with worse things than being accused of caring about his troublemaking cousin the moment she laughed happily like that.
Subtly guiding the forlorn woman to sit on a nearby bench, Shinichi tries his best to cheer her up. “You look really nice tonight.” Shinichi meant it honestly. While Ran looked great in lavender and red (probably one of the reasons why it was his favorite color in the first place), he tended to favor blue for himself. Meanwhile, blue seemed to favor Aoko-chan. In her glittering sapphire dress and crystal pumps, she looked every bit a modern-day Cinderella. Or maybe it was the total opposite and it was that modern-day Lupin running out of time. Speaking of…
While he knew he had an overinflated ego at times, Shinichi would like to think he wasn’t as bad as his dad. While he wasn’t as good as Kuroba, he thinks he’s picked up some things from his mother.
‘Ha, everyone knows I’m the one who took after Yukiko-obaa san.’
‘…’
‘I’m telling kaa-san you said that.’
‘W-wait, I actually have a reason I can call her obaa-san now.’
‘Ha, as if that’ll stop her.’
At the very least, he shudders to think he was as bad as Hattori, so he can’t help but ask, “How could you tell?”
Aoko-chan still seemed blue but lifts up a corner of her mouth in reply, “Kaito doesn’t usually wear dark clothes.”
Remembering countless pre-heist preparations, Shinichi opens his mouth ready to object before Aoko interrupts, “Aoko knows what you’re going to say, Kudo-san. Kaito wears dark clothes when he wants to hide, but for something like this he wouldn’t be able to help but draw attention to himself. He’d wear white or something bright.” Or something colorful and loud. Thoughtlessly she reaches up to stroke the feathers of the dove which had comfortably made a home on her head. She gives up the hairstyle for a lost cause and gets lost in her thoughts.
Aoko had always hated the dark. It reminded her too much of the silence of an empty home. But Kaito was always loud and bright, sometimes blinding. Like a beacon she would always be drawn to him in a crowd and then she wouldn’t be alone anymore.
She decides to continue, “Also, remember what you said earlier,” she smiles wryly, “Kaito wouldn’t compliment what I was wearing. You’re too much of a gentleman, Kudo-san, it still shows. You didn’t call me ‘Ahouko’ even once.”
Shinichi’s sure Aoko-chan’s expression was mirrored by his own deadpan look. They really resembled Hattori and Kazuha-chan at times, for better or worse. He knew that every couple had their own quirks and expressions, but he couldn’t help but worry. Since he wouldn’t ever admit being worried for that menace, let’s just say he was worried about Aoko and leave it at that.
“Still,” Aoko says while fiddling with her fingers, “You almost had Aoko fooled. You did his trick exactly like he would have done it. Is that why Heart-chan is with you?”
He takes a split-second before answering to ask, “Heart-chan?”
Aoko nods like he’s supposed to get it, “Yeah, Hato-chan.”
Shinichi deadpans. Well what else could he expect from someone who loved his punny riddles? Rather, ‘Heart-chan’ was supposed to keep an eye on him, and anyway ‘this little gal knows you already’ before said dove had disappeared into his clothes. Shinichi doesn’t admit to being impressed especially when he could tell how the other man had done it within five seconds. “Something like that,” he answers instead.
Kuroba should be satisfied that she’d done her job, Shinichi thinks, remembering the aftertaste of feathers. And yet he also remembers that annoyingly high-pitched feedback. Grimacing, he thinks that he better be satisfied. At the very least Shinichi was grateful so he gives the dove a pat of his own.
Shinichi was no magician, but if Kuroba could play at being detective, then he could do no less. If they were two sides of the same coin then something like replicating a trick he’s cracked the mystery to was as simple as child’s play.
Still, he was a detective and eternally curious at heart, “So how?” He simply asks, trusting Aoko-chan to understand.
Aoko smiles, a bit brighter than before, “The rose would have been blue,” since it was a special occasion after all, “And,” here Aoko pauses feeling herself blush, “Kaito breathes differently, ifthatmakesanysense,” she exclaims in a rush. She peeks up at the older detective, almost feeling embarrassed at being judged. She can’t help it, Kudo-san and Ran-chan always seemed to her to be so sophisticated and mature, a steady and steadfast couple if anything, that she worried if she was still childish in comparison.
Rather than shocked though, Kudo-san looks like he understands. “I get it, Aoko-chan.” And he really did, she didn’t have to explain. He’d compared women to mysteries once (with time he can look back on it now and see it as a child’s frustration and fear at not being able to understand the heart of the one dearest to him), but they were incredible detectives too. He remembers being shocked that Ran could tell Kuroba wasn’t him (sometimes he might underestimate her too much, it’s a lesson he’s happy to keep relearning), and surmises that this must be something like it. No wonder, Kaitou Kid had always been so tight-lipped. The greatest danger to his identity hadn’t been him, but Nakamori, albeit a different Nakamori than everyone thought.
Aoko breathes in the cold night air. It would be midnight soon. “So what happened? Did he…start again?”
Aoko released a huge sigh of relief when Kudo-san shakes his head empathically, “Kuroba knows better than to break your heart like that,” at her snort, he grins, “Well at least he should know better because you’d be the first to haul him right to jail, with me and Hakuba right behind you. I’m sure Hattori wouldn’t want to be left out either.”
At her energetic response of ‘much better’, Shinichi smiles feeling happy that he managed to allay a bit of her worries.
“It’s just that…he could have told Aoko he couldn’t make it. He said no more lies after all.” She sighed.
“Aoko doesn’t want to hold him back from doing what he loves. She knows how much he enjoys the stage and spotlight, but sometimes Aoko just enjoys the simple things. Just him being here is enough for Aoko. She wonders if she’s selfish for feeling this way,” she says while placing her chin on her palms, pouting.
Shinichi nods noncommittally. It’s not as if he doesn’t get it. Although it’s been years, his heart still twists at the memory of Ran bursting into tears after smiling so brightly. It wasn’t his place to say, ‘maybe he really had a good reason’ when excuses were just another kind of lie. ‘There was only one truth,’ right?
Even if he could understand Aoko’s pain, it also wasn’t his place to chastise Kuroba when he had been the same. Detective and thief, critic and performer, truth and lie - they were indeed two sides of the same coin because, unlike Hattori, unlike Hakuba, they made their home in that grey area in between.
One truth that he can be sure of though, enough that he can confidently tell Aoko is this, “At the very least, Aoko-chan, no matter what mischief that guy gets up to, he’ll always return home to you. If there’s anything he’d wish for the most, it would be your happiness.” For the man with a thousand faces who knew everyone and could become anyone, there was at least one person in the whole world who knew the person behind the mask absolutely and completely.
He hears a soft ‘thanks’ at the same time a small smile tentatively blooms on Aoko’s face.

GONG
‘It’s showtime!’
Ok, that hadn’t been a whisper from the mic he was wearing on his collar. He’s sure he had been listening in through that nifty accessory Heart-chan was wearing from who knows where, and finally decided to make his entrance.
Geez, that guy sure liked to make people wait (Shinichi thinks he deserves to be purposefully obtuse for once. He’s made too many comparisons between them already).
At the wonderstruck expression on Aoko’s face at the multitude of blue fireworks scattered across the night sky above the clocktower, Shinichi hopes that she and he would think this was all worth it.
Ironic that he’d find himself here again, finally facing his rival after so many years after that first meeting that they had both forgotten, and in vastly different circumstances too. He has to admit though that he is relieved to find out that that once moonlighting thief had managed to protect what was important to him.
He watched with Aoko as a glider with a jet engine sky wrote the words, ‘Happy anniversary!’ (As he remembers free falling off a blimp, Shinichi thinks wryly that he finally managed to solve that problem.)
Unlike Aoko though, he didn’t shout a delighted gasp of surprise when a pillar of pink smoke and glitter suddenly puffed in between them.
“Kaito!”
No matter how many times she’d seen it happen, she would probably always react in wonder as if it was the first time. (Not for the first time for him when looking at Aoko, he is reminded of Ran’s reactions after every successful deduction. Well, the very first time wasn’t really the awed reaction he’d hoped for. Still, he treasured that moment).
Kuroba Kaito, Kaitou Kid, the world’s most daring magician appeared with a bang. He might have had thousands of fans (in both personas), but from the wide grin and manic energy he had now it seemed like he was performing for the entire world in the form of one person.
“What’s that supposed to be, Ahouko?” He says pointing to the ruffled mess left of Aoko’s hair when Heart-chan left to return to her rightful master. It was teasing but still all the fonder for it.
“Mou, don’t tease, Kaito. Not when you’re so late,”
“On the contrary, I’m right on time,” and with a snap of his fingers, Aoko’s hair transformed into the elegant chignon she’d be wrangling it into the whole night.
Hands in his pockets, Shinichi observed the other man dressed to the nines in a white and blue suit. He could be accused of cosplaying a very popular phantom thief except the shade of blue was slightly different, and instead matched the eyes of his lovely companion. “Dummy?”
He was referring the obvious decoy still writing above them, but as expected when Kaito drew closer and narrowed his eyes at him, he’d gotten the double meaning.
“I thought I might have had to ruin my cue and come in too early, but good thing you were here, huh?” Kaito scratched Heart-chan on the top of her feathered head for being such a good girl, before whirling to point at his near doppelganger, “And you! A great detective shouldn’t be trying to steal a phantom thief’s job. That was way too close a call! Don’t make me tell on you to Ran.”
Shinichi scoffs lightly. Now he understood what Hattori must have felt back then, and inspired, he just says with a smirk, “Let’s just say we’re even now.”
Kaito narrows his eyes further if that were even possible. “You hold onto a grudge for way too long.”
“Says you.”
"Wow," Aoko says awed, "Looking at the both of you side-by-side like this...it's like looking at a mirrored reflection!"
"What're you talking about, Aoko? I'm obviously more good looking," Kaito boasts. "Anyway..."
Shinichi could tell he was planning something from how he was creeping closer but not even he could have expected being blindfolded with magic scarves.
“Oi, Kuroba!”
Kaito knew he probably should have just waited till Kudo left but he never could keep his cool around Aoko. In a whirlwind rush, he drew her in a dance position and finally stole her lips.
Could it be called stealing if they were his in the first place? He may have been a retired thief, and call him a hypocrite if you had to, but he would never let anyone steal this. He may have been forced to look for Pandora, but all the world’s jewels could not compare to this one precious sapphire.
The moment he saw her in her get-up, his heart stopped and he suddenly couldn’t sit still. It was a surreal experience watching her with ‘himself’ from the outside, and to still feel jealous even when it was his own plan.
Arghh, just call him a hypocrite and be done with it, because the moment of that near-kiss, his life suddenly flashed before his eyes and all those times he took Kudo’s place with Ran. He apologizes to the metantei in his mind. Man, even if he did use him as bait for his trigger-happy black organization, Kaito realizes that that little detective must have had so much patience with him to not just punt him to the moon for all the stunts he did back then. He suddenly shudders remembering that ominous flash of glasses that signaled an ass-kicking. On principle, he started staying away from glasses-wearing grade schoolers after that. Trauma ran deep after all.
But he felt everything settle into place the moment he felt Aoko melting into his arms. He thought he knew temptation when he had a chance to steal a first kiss back then, but he had been content to let Sleeping Beauty rest. And yet, even after biting the bullet (and the plush apple that was Aoko’s lips), temptation still continued its siren call every time he saw her.
He must have really missed her.
A rude cough woke him up from his wonderful dream, as Aoko squeaked and hid behind him.
“I’m giving you three seconds, so the moment I remove this I better not see anything scarring.”
“You wish,” Kaito responds childishly.
As Shinichi sighed sufferingly and peeked from beneath the blindfold, he remarks, “Should I be thankful you didn’t use sleeping gas?”
Interlacing Aoko’s fingers with his own, he shoots his cousin a finger salute and jokes, “Could still be an option.”
“Just try it. I’d tranq you first,” he says, narrowing his eyes at him, “But, I don’t want to ruin Aoko-chan’s evening after she waited so long for you.”
“Pot,” Kaito points to him, then to himself, “Meet Kettle.”
Shinichi rolls his eyes, but didn’t say anything knowing he had a point. “So, any reason why you couldn’t just wait until I left?”
“Because,” Kaito says cheekily before turning to Aoko with a bright, blue rose suddenly in his hand, “I just wanted to show you how it’s done.” Aoko looked even more delighted with the sudden gift.
“Right, right,” he says playing along, as he ruffles his hair. “Well, I’m off. It’s an early day tomorrow, and knowing Ran she’s probably waiting up,” partly to hear any ‘juicy details’ in her own words. “You kids have fun now,” he says with a wave as he turned away from them.
“Oi, metantei!”
When Shinichi turns back, he sees Kaito look unexpectedly sheepish, “Thanks again for this.”
With a small smile, he just replies with a ‘Hai, hai,’ as he finally leaves them to enjoy their anniversary in peace. He’d heard from Ran who heard from Aoko-chan that it was the anniversary of when they met, as well as the anniversary of when the Kaitou Kid had finally given up his mantle and the exciting life of a phantom thief to confess to his best friend. Rumor had it than even when he had the entire female population’s attention, he had only ever and truly sought after the regard of one specific person. Perhaps it was some kind of karmic justice that it was also the same person who hated his guts, and would continue to do so as long as he was still stealing. And so he’d given up the gold to get the girl. Or so the rumor went.
It was a long day and he’s just about ready to snuggle with Ran in bed as he entertained her with the kind of story she’d love.
From the excited gasp he heard behind him, he’s sure Aoko-chan had finally seen what his quick gaze noticed as soon as Kuroba whipped up that rose – another blue rose nestled in its petals, or more accurately it was an asteria, a star sapphire inlaid in a white-gold setting fashioned after a rose. Miniature vines made up its small band. Shinichi’s pretty sure it would fit perfectly, even imagined Kuroba dressing up as Aoko-chan to make sure it really did fit.
Another thing he noticed, the slightly off-kitler English letter ‘H’. Everything else in the message had been lowercase. Shinichi knew Kuroba, whether he was Kaitou Kid or not, being the perfectionist he was, wouldn’t make a mistake like that. Maybe it wasn’t supposed to be an ‘H’ and he had to improvise. Shinichi couldn’t be sure, but it almost looked like it could have been an English letter ‘w’.
Aoko-chan might not get the implications right away. Diamonds were traditional after all (like his and Ran’s), but when had Kuroba ever been conventional?
Seeing that gem had brought back memories of a fallen emperor, a chain of red lights, a forced landing, and a heartfelt confession. As if Shinichi could ever forget. It could have been the same gem that he tried to steal back then.
“I promise I didn’t steal this one, Aoko. Really!”
Just maybe scoured the world for it, which was why he had been missing for a week in the guise of a show. He’d used his own legal (and extra-legal too) contacts in the police, and even Shinichi’s. In the end he’d even asked Sonoko, Momiji-san, old man Suzuki, and when he’d run out of billionaires to ask, his dad and mom. They might have heard something. Even Kuroba as much as it pained his pride to do it, asked his oyaji who had heard of news of the missing gem during his own escapades.
Maybe he wasn’t a detective, and no longer a thief, but Kuroba was still a master storyteller. A star fit perfectly with the moon. And what’s more…
Destiny, Hope, Faith. What they had encountered was a fake empress with a fake gem, but he thought the genuine article fit Aoko-chan perfectly. That true and utter - some would say blind – faith in him, the real him under the smoke and mirrors.
Maybe he had almost lost hope, but just like Pandora, he kept a little bit of it close to his heart. So long as she was there waiting for him and believing in him.
And just like that, no matter how many obstacles there were of other’s and their own making, maybe it was just destiny for them to be. Together.
Or maybe, he laughs at himself, he was just the sentimental fool Ran said he was, to be comparing their situations.
They were alike, as much as he hated to admit it. Maybe blood really did run that deep. So, he can say that Kuroba could be as stupid as him sometimes. But at the same time, he knew that Kuroba knew how lucky he was to have her, after everything. And they could only be so lucky not to mess up again and end up having to let go.
Maybe his original plan was to make it into one spectacular show, but he’d always been good at improvising, and no magician worth his salt would leave a young woman’s wish unheard and not granted. And so, his original plans took a back seat, and he turned it into something private and just for them instead. Despite that, he can understand if Kuroba still needed his critic one more time, to have someone witness no matter what he decided, and to stop him from running away if needed.
But…
He takes one last look as soon as he’s far enough. Aoko-chan had her arms around him, tight as if she never wanted to let go as she admired the ring on her left finger over his shoulder. Kuroba looked caught off guard, bright red and blushing with no trace of a suave Phantom Thief on his face, just a man flustered in the embrace of the one he loved, before he held her back, equally as tight.
He doesn’t think he needs to worry about anything on that front. He’d once been a thief, and thieves tended to guard their treasures zealously.
And well, Shinichi thinks chuckling, if it was witnesses he needed, then witnesses he’d get. By tomorrow, everyone of their acquaintances would hear of the happy news, courtesy of Ran.
He’s sure to enjoy the chase.
‘Good luck, Kaitou Kid.’

I was really suprised to see someone noticing my biggest DCMK work here (read the last post), so I thinked about trying to translate it. I feel shy, since I mainly use a translator and edit the result, but it won't hurt to try something ❤️
I posted only the first chapter at the moment. It's not a long one, but this work has 61 chapters originaly, so you can imagine how many things happens there after 😂
I may translate this further if you'll like this work!
TW: this work has a lot of violence in some chapters, much more than in the first chapter. Be prepared!

Guys! I actually made Chatgpt write a KID one shot, a sad one at that.
It's not very big though, I tried something about 1500 words max.
The idea was nice, I quite liked the plot.
It's down here ⇓( ̄︶ ̄)⇓
Title: "The Final Heist"
The moon hung low over the city, casting a soft, silver glow over the bustling streets of Tokyo. In the distance, the towering silhouette of a high-rise gleamed with lights, but it was the smaller, more intimate spaces—the alleyways and quiet corners—that seemed to pulse with a melancholic energy tonight. It was a night that held promise of something more, but something was off, something he couldn’t quite put into words.
Kaitou KID stood atop the rooftop, his signature white cape billowing in the cool wind. His eyes scanned the city, alert but weary, like a bird perched in the dark before flight. He could hear the faint sounds of sirens in the distance, the familiar rhythm of pursuit following his every step. But tonight, he wasn’t running. He wasn’t escaping. Tonight, he had a different purpose.
His fingers brushed the edge of the pendant around his neck, a small gesture, almost absent-minded. The gem embedded in it sparkled with a deep, reflective hue—pandora, a treasure that had been his target for months. Tonight, it would be his final heist. He had promised himself that after this, he would disappear.
The sound of footsteps behind him broke the stillness, and without turning, he knew who it was.
“KID, are you really going through with it?” came a familiar voice, thick with concern.
He didn’t need to look to know that it was Aoko. Her presence, even in the dark, was like a light he couldn’t escape, even though he wanted to.
“What do you think, Aoko?” He didn’t look at her, his voice cold, though it cracked with something else beneath it.
“Don’t do this,” she pleaded, her voice softer now, almost breaking. “You’ve said this before—after you find Pandora, you were going to stop. You promised me...”
The words hung between them, heavy and painful, like a weight that neither of them could lift. She moved closer, the sound of her shoes clicking softly on the rooftop.
Kaitou KID clenched his fists, his heart racing in a way that made him feel weak, exposed. He had known Aoko his entire life, and yet, in this moment, it felt like they were worlds apart. She was the light, the anchor in his life. And he? He was the shadow, the thief who could never quite escape the darkness within himself.
“I’ve never been good for anyone, Aoko,” he finally said, his voice hollow. “You know that. I live in a world of lies, of deception. I can never be the person you want me to be.”
Aoko's breath hitched, and for a moment, there was only silence. The city’s pulse seemed distant, as if it, too, was holding its breath. Then she spoke again, her voice a whisper, though it cut through the still night like a blade.
“You don’t have to be perfect, Kaito. You don’t have to be KID. You’re already enough. I—” Her voice faltered. “I love you. Please don’t throw it all away.”
He turned then, the moonlight catching the edge of his mask. The expression in his eyes was unreadable, distant, as though he were looking past her, beyond the world around them. His fingers tightened around pandora, and he felt a strange sense of finality in the action, like closing a chapter that had been open for far too long.
“Aoko,” he whispered, the words tasting bitter on his tongue. “If I stay… if I try to be that person for you, then I’m just lying to both of us. I can’t be anyone else. KID is who I am. The thief. The phantom. I can’t change that.”
Tears glistened in Aoko's eyes, reflecting the moonlight like fragile glass. “You don’t have to change who you are. Just… just stay with me. You can still be Kaito. I can accept you. But you don’t have to live in this endless game. You don’t have to keep running away from everything.”
Kaitou KID swallowed hard, his throat tight. The weight of her words pressed down on him, suffocating him. He wanted so badly to believe them. He wanted to let go of the mask, to let someone—her—see the real Kaito. But he couldn't.
The sound of police sirens grew louder in the distance, signaling the inevitable end of the heist. His heart raced again, but this time, it wasn’t with excitement. It was with the pain of knowing that the moment he’d been dreading was finally here.
“Goodbye, Aoko,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Before she could react, before she could say anything else, he turned and leaped from the rooftop, vanishing into the night.
Aoko stood frozen, staring at the empty space where he had been. Her heart ached as she pressed a hand to her chest, the cold wind biting at her skin, yet the emptiness inside her felt so much colder. She had always known he was running, but tonight, she realized he was running from himself.
Kaitou KID didn’t look back. His figure melted into the shadows of the city, leaving only the faint echo of his footsteps in the silence.
Pandora was in his grasp, but in that moment, it meant nothing. He had gained the treasure, but lost something far more valuable.
---
Later that night…
Aoko stood alone in her apartment, her fingers trembling as she reached for her phone. She could still feel the weight of his absence, the unspoken goodbye hanging between them. It was a familiar ache, one that she had carried with her for so long. Yet this time, it felt different. This time, she knew the game had changed.
She dialed a number, her heart pounding in her chest.
The phone rang, and then, after a moment, a familiar voice answered. It was Kaito’s—his real voice, not the mask.
“I’m sorry, Aoko,” he said quietly, as though he were apologizing for the unspoken words, the pain he had left behind.
A single tear slipped down her cheek as she whispered into the phone, “I’ll wait for you. No matter how long it takes.”
But in her heart, she knew. The man who would come back wasn’t the one who had left her tonight. He was a different version of Kaito, one she wasn’t sure she could ever reach.
And yet, despite everything, she would wait.
---
End.
Had to edit around a little because Chatgpt referred to pandora with the phantom jewel for some reason that is beyond me.
Anyways, I'm out, peace! ✌️。◕‿◕。✌️

A Gentle Touch
Hello, @faru-itsok! I am your @dcmksecretsanta for this year! 🎅🏻 🎁 (or rather, last year because it’s already 2023 aaaaaaa I’m very very sorryyyyyy!🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️)
Here it is, your gift! I had to cut it in half because I didn’t want to keep you waiting any longer!
Wishing you a very Merry belated Christmas/Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year 2023! May 2023 bring you hope, creativity and health! 🎆 📣 ✨
Special thanks to Raka ( @rakashith ) for your thoughts and advices, and @blenderfullasarcasm for beta-ing this fic, and also thanks to @mirrorfalls for giving me the idea to start writing this work! Thank you all, you’ve helped me a BUNCH!
And also Special Thanks to the host Sabrina for being patient with me and also for being very understanding! Thank you for hosting this event, I’ve enjoyed every gifts everyone shared! 💜Now then, please enjoy the first part! I’m currently in process of writing the second part! 💜 ✨
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapters: 1/2
Rating: General Audiences
Words: 3.9k
Characters: Kuroba Kaito | Kaitou Kid, Nakamori Aoko
Additional Tags: DCMK Secret Santa, Secret Santa, Gift Fic, Fluff, Fluff and Humor, Humor, i guess?, Dessert & Sweets, Touch-Starved, Forehead Touching, Swearing, a bit - Freeform
Summary:
Humans bond through physical touch. Hugging and other forms of nonsexual touching causes your brain to release oxytocin, known as the ‘bonding hormone’. From the day we are born till the day we die, our need for physical contact remains. Giving and receiving physical touch has the power to heal more than a broken heart.
Aoko doesn’t understand why Kaito is avoiding her, and she resolves to do something about it.
.
.
.
Kaito has been avoiding Aoko lately.
Well, not quite like that - they see each other everyday. Aoko will whack him with her mop if Kaito even so much as tries to avoid Aoko’s presence. No, it’s not that.
Kaito has been avoiding skin-to-skin contact with Aoko. No, not like that, either, would you get your damn minds out of the gutter, please!
It’s just…
Aoko and Kaito have been best friends for as long as she can remember, from the moment Kaito gave her that beautiful blue rose under that clocktower. Since then, they’ve gone through everything together, holding hands most of the time. They’ve always had skin-to-skin contact, whether it be hand holding or hugging or teasing touches. They’re also used to touching the other’s forehead with their own for reassurances when they’re down sometimes.
For example, if Kaito ever sees someone performing street magic, his mind turns to his father, and his eyes lose their light a little. Aoko always notices, and she'll poke his cheek in a teasing but grounding way or hold his hand to bring Kaito out of his slump before it goes any deeper. Kaito, in turn, gives Aoko pats on the head and thus teasingly messes up her hair, which will bring Aoko’s head back to the present. He also holds Aoko’s hand whenever they both feel like it.
She doesn’t mind it. And she knows Kaito feels the same.
However, since starting high school, their skin-to-skin touches have lessened slightly. Aoko hadn’t thought of it much, because they were both so busy with school and after school clubs that they hadn’t had time to catch up with each other as often as they’d liked.
Even still, they’d touched each other whenever they had the chance to. Aoko likes having skin-to-skin contact with her best friend.
Please read the rest on the link (AO3)!

Day 2: Detective/police
Kaito and Aoko as detectives!!
So this is a fanart for my favourite KaiAo fanfic on ff.net which is Circle of Fate by kaitothegreat
Here's the link
Story: Circle of Fate https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11933005/0/
In this au they're not childhood friends and the first time they met was literally crashing into each other.
I really love their dynamic and how Kaito jerkiness level is peak (i love him). Also the development of their relationship is well done and honestly so cute.
Generally, i really love all of the author works but if i made a list of rankings this fic will be in first place

Hi, Can you list homoerotic moments of kaishin? Because I will never believe they are cousins, their chemistry is so hot.
Free reign to gush about one of my OTPs? DON'T MIND IF I DO!
Okay, so we have to start with the start of their interactions, what we all consider their anniversary, April Fools! This was so gay it got to be annimated twice! That's how iconic the moment is!
I cannot speak enough about how Kaito impressed Shinichi so much he waxed poetry about his arrival! Shinichi, who started this episode saying he isn't interested in a simple thief ends it with a fascination for him that ends with him being known as the KID Killer because he loves to chase him.
And their next encounter is them WORKING TOGETHER. Like damn they move quickly! Sure, Shinichi was sick but Kaito helped take care of him (damn we already got our hurt/comfort) and Shinichi already starts with the excuses to let him go!
Then there is the fact that Kaito's own show tells us HE DESIGNS HIS HEISTS FOR SHINICHI. I mean how gay can they get?! Kaito who is very vocal about disliking detectives and seeing them as "critics" yet here he is going out of his way to dazzle one of these detectives?! I'm sorry but how am I supposed to interpret that as anything other than these two flirting!
AND SHINICHI. The boy just creates excuse after excuse to let Kaito go! And he gets SO EXCITED when they get to work together! He is so goddamn gay for Kaito, Vermouth used it against him! Imagine your enemy knowing how gay you are and using it against you? So cringe!
Should I talk about how their "first" meeting as Shinichi and KID took place at the romantic location for Kaito and Aoko? And how we know now that their first encounter as Shinichi and Kaito took place when Shinichi was looking for date places and he found KAITO to be the most romantic of the people he documented to the point he gets FLUSTERED about it?!
Or talk about all their movies together? 3 had the dove! 8 had them piloting a plane together! 10 had Kaito save Shinichi TWICE! 14 Kaito saved Shinichi AGAIN and then they worked together! 19 was about how Shinichi was certain something was off about Kaito and wanting to learn the truth! 23 IS JUST A KAISHIN FANFIC!
Our the imagery of destined rivals and the sinner in white and demon of light descriptions? OR HOW THEIR VOICE ACTOR SHIPS THEM TOO!
In conclusion GAY, GAY HOMOSEXUAL GAY
PS:
Shinichi touched Kaito's dick.

I'm too lazy to make this a fanfic, so I'll just comment on my thoughts.
Do you remember that episode where Hattori and Hakuba confront each other? Well, I wanted to do a little rewriting on this one.
Imagine Hakuba talking to his friends, specifically Aoko and Kaito, telling them that he returned from London to participate in a television show.
Clearly, Aoko drags Kaito and Akako to her house to watch it, but they are surprised to not find the "koushien detective" show. Akako uses her powers to discover where Hakuba is and by observing him through her crystal ball they realize that he is trapped on an island.
They observe what happens there for a while and chat a little.
Kaito: It seems that Hakuba's father keeps comparing him to other detectives.
Aoko: I hate when he says he's not Japanese enough!
Aoko: Hakuba is quite Japanese!
Akako: I don't think I should blame others because his father is stupid, but I understand where his words come from.
Aoko: Plus, Hakuba is better than that fool Shinichi Kudo! Hakuba is the representative of the east!
Kaito: Shouldn't we focus on going to rescue him?
Akako: I've never been to that island, so I can't teleport us.
All this backstory to say, I really like the idea of Kaito going to find Hakuba in a helicopter while he yells "Hebo-tantein!" and Hakuba responds with "Looks like the circus came for me." NOTE: I think Hakuba mentions TOO MUCH how disappointed he is that Hattori is not "a good detective", it made me think a lot that maybe his father compares him to Shinichi and Hattori, but more so to Hattori because he is also the son of a police officer.
Hakuba is probably very envious of Shinichi's title of "Heisei Sherlock Holmes."

just finished my rewatch binge of the old Magic Kaito anime episodes (not to be confused with Magic Kaito 1412, I just started my rewatch of that), and the fandom is really sleeping on the potential of Agasa and Jii being acquaintances, even to the point Agasa makes devices for Jii, which in turn KID uses during heists. Yeah it might have been a throw away reference, a little bit of fan service, but IMAGINE a fic with Agasa going to a KID heist with Conan and recognizing one of the devices KID uses, in turn figuring out KID is somehow connected to Jii (I doubt Jii would tell Agasa that the devises are for KID when he asked for them), and Conan/Shinichi pulls this information out of Agasa and meets Kaito that way.
There's plenty of fanfics where Shinichi meets Kaito through Hakuba, or through Aoko through Ginzo, or just by happenstance, but I think it would be a fun little change for Kaito to walk into Jii's bar one day and have the full body shock of seeing Shinichi Just Standing There talking to Jii and having to pretend to be cool while Shinichi definitely can tell something's up.
Idk I just think it's interesting that the fandom doesn't play with this throw away tidbit, I don't think I've seen a single KaiShin fic where they meet through their Old Man Friends/Family. If anyone *has* seen a fic with this please hit me up, I might genuinely write it myself brnfndnfn

"She probably thinks I'm a pervert"
Kaito raises an eyebrow at the young lad.
"I was trying to- to catch the culprit's hand and then he just had to move. So I wounded up touching her- her-"
Shinichi groans, covering his face with his hands. There's pure embarrassment in his tone and a flush on his cheeks.
"I touched her….butt on accident and before I knew it, my timer was off and I was slapped on the face" He adds, pointing to the evident slap mark on his left side along with him holding a bag of ice.
Kaito couldn't help but laugh, nearly making the glass of his drink fall to the floor. The highschool detective glared.
"Good news is, you've met your soulmate" Kaito says cheekily.
"In the most embarrassing way possible, you mean" Shinichi lets the back of his head fall to the couch's heading. "Luckily Conan was there to trip the thief while I was knocked out"
Kaito nodded, still grinning like a cheshire cat. "Conan said her name was…Run?"
"Ran, yes, and my little brother had to explain the whole situation citing that I was not at all a pervert. Which somewhat saved my dignity and lessened the damage of my reputation and hopefully, let my soulmate think that I was not at all trying to do anything" Shinichi rambles on and about.
The magician clicks his tongue, placing his drink on the stand table.
"It's not so bad if you think about it, more of a misunderstanding per say. Which was easily solved" Kaito stands and pats his hair in a taunting way.
"And I don't understand why it's a big deal" He adds.
"Well that's because you haven't met your soulmate yet!" Shinichi retaliates, shooing off his hand.
Kaito shrugs, seeming unbothered.
Inside, he was jumping with nervousness. It wasn't his emotions. It was his soulmate's. A few seconds ago, his other half seemed to be excited but now, she felt the pit of her stomach growing hot and her skin felt cold just like what he was experiencing as of now.
It was one of the things that they contrast. Kaito was good at hiding his emotions, the best of it, the master of poker face and everyone couldn't even tell what he felt which somewhat scared them.
His soulmate however, was quite the opposite. He could feel everything that she was feeling, from her happiness, to her sadness, to her nervousness.
Whatever affected her, affected him as well.
"I haven't met her yet but you know how her emotions are tied to mine. So when she's happy, I'm happy"
Kaito points to a photo frame.
"Remember on the first day of school? I cried, literally, as I was introducing myself" Kaito states, a slight embarrassment yet amusement taking over his features.
He never once hated the bond.
Even when it sometimes showed off his emotions. He liked it. It kept him grounded. Though when she cries, he could feel his heart breaking and he wished that he could wipe her tears away but he couldn't. Atleast not yet. He'd wait for the right moment, hopefully it would be soon.
Nervousness settled in him again.
As Shinichi was about to reply, his mouth already opened. The ringing of his door made their conversation come to a halt.
Oddly enough, Kaito jumped.
An action he replicated from his other half. The doorbell seemed to be a bit loud which was odd.
"A client…!"
Shinichi stands up with glinting eyes, throwing away the bag of ice for Kaito to catch irritatedly as he made his way towards the entrance.
Kaito sighs before putting the ice bag in the refrigerator. Seconds later, he follows after his friend, a bit confused as to why he had not let his guest enter yet. As he gets there, he nearly laughs. The young detective had the door wide open.
Shinichi's soulmate was flushing as she held out a baked pie and Shinichi could only stare at her with a brighter flush and an agape mouth.
It looked like they were having a moment.
"Well this is awkward" Kaito interrupts.
Shinichi instantly glares at him, giving him a smack on the head.
"Ow!" A female voice exclaims.
Kaito grunts but he stops dead on his tracks.
Shinichi's soulmate, Ran if he remembers correctly, steps aside in confusion. Behind her was what he assumed was Ran's companion and funny enough, she was also rubbing the same spot of her head.
Kaito nearly splutters.
"Do that again" He commands Shinichi.
Shinichi was too surprised to register his order. He was looking at them with pure confusion. Before the detective could even follow his command, the girl glares with her light blue eyes, still rubbing her sore head. She brings a hand to to her forehead and flicks it.
Kaito jumps from the action, clutching his forehead.
"Soulmates" Shinichi says in pure surprise. Turning to the magician, he grins. "Well isn't that a surprise?"
Ran, seeing the scenario play out. She clears her throat and grabs ahold of the detective's wrist, dragging them inside the Kudo Residence. He yelps but follows her.
Kaito didn't mind, he was still staring at his soulmate.
The girl was glaring at him still, she was rubbing the pain away and her messy bangs framed her face, making her glare less intimidating and more….cute.
Well she's pretty....
"Um- it's nice to finally meet you" He says awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head.
And as if a switch was turned off and realization finally slapped her. She brightens to which he felt, of course. Her flush reflected on his face and his heart was beating.
So this is what it feels like
"Uh- same to you too…" She says so timidly and so cutely. Moving away from him for a moment.
He steps forward and closes the door behind him. For a few seconds, they just stand there, averting their gazes from each other. He felt awkward, he didn't know what to say.
"Are you usually this awkward?" She questions and her voice brings him back to his senses.
He shakes his head. "No, I'm usually composed"
She nods. "Yeah, I feel that. You're like a wall, you barely feel anything and when you do, it's usually pride and smugness" She comments, a dry chuckle came off her lips.
He chuckles too, genuine.
Kaito holds out his hand and flicks it, a blue rose appearing. He smiles at her, ignoring the beating of his heart and the heat on his face.
"I'm Kuroba Kaito"
She stares at it, surprise and he could feel her delight and amazement from her emotions to which he felt proud of.
Time to impress
She takes hold of the flower gently and with shaky fingers. Bringing it close to her, she hums in delight as the fragrance invaded her senses..
"I'm NakamorI Aoko" She smiles.
Aoko huh?

seeing ur akako and shinichi au makes me so happy, cuz I so much WISH they interacted more (knowing that it'll never happen, the same way I wish kaito and ai interacted more lol) thinking about akako reminded me how she can never cry or she'll lose her magic as a witch, I honestly wished that was explored more orz
I have so many feelings about Akako, like, the whole "Magic and demons are real" thing... like, that's... that's a big thing? I know Kaito manga have similar vibes to Ranma 1/2 and similar stuff, comedy with some action, if is funny is added, no biggie, but now that Kaito and Conan stories are super intertwined I feel like I can't ignore Akako.
She exists, She can predict stuff, and she has *MAGICAL POWERS* that could kill if she wanted, but prefers to be loved (Even if it is an artificial love) She aggressively likes Kaito, and acts all evil but in the end, she helps him, She doesn't like Aoko but plays silly pranks on her (Well, at least in one chapter where she teaches Aoko a silly spell) and that needs to feel loved by everyone, I find that super sad, like, she needs to use a spell because she doesn't believe anyone can love as she is, or maybe it is just a silly gag and I'm reading too much
Idk, most stories and fanfics use her to move the story to a more fantastic setting (I like that too!) but I find her as a person to be interesting, like a Character in the wrong story, misplaced but wanting to fit anyway, even if is via force. Like someone who wants to be super cool but in reality, is not
I wanted to make a cool doodle but I guess I'm a bit ded, hahaha
I'm sorry Akako, I decided to give you ShinichiPhobia because it is funny.
But I promise Shinichi is a cutie

ANOTHER "Fanfic Search Help" Request because I'm at the end of my rope and very desperate for some good ol' nostalgic read. Pls help me.
Kaishin pairing.
DCMK fandom.
Angsty and Dark.
Toichi lives sort-of???
Other world mishaps.
This time the plot is mostly about Kaito Kuroba being sent to another world where the BO didn't ruin his life. I say "mostly" because this is a series of fics in AO3 and some of them focus on Shinichi's P.O.V. too. The biggest (heart) kicker is that in their original world, the BO killed off each of their friends and family one by one until it's just the two of them against the world with nothing but a few small tokens to remember each person they lost by. The two of them were always together, but they were in too much danger to prioritize the idea of being "together". Still, Kaito and Shinichi were each other's lifeline. At their last chance to keep Pandora away from the Crows, Shinichi made a choice that had him be disguised as Kaitou KID while he paralyzes Kaito from following so he, instead, can die in the thief's place. A sequence of mourning and magical mishaps happen after, which led to Kaito being sent to a world where BOTH his parents were still alive, but there's another him in it too. One who still has a crush on Aoko and had no reason to take on the KID mantle from his father. While he gathers his bearings in this new reality where he still has people to care for him, we later learn that another Shinichi exist here too. One that never took the Apotoxin, but is somehow just as miserable as his dead counterpart. Mostly homeschooled, this Shinichi never grew up being viewed as a "great detective" rather more as a "corpse magnet weirdo" who has no friends and got involved in an incident in his childhood that would traumatize anyone (except for one indigo eyed boy he met then who was adamant about his dad rescuing them. Huh... He wonders how that kid's doing now). Bullied and distant from even Ran and Sonoko, he lacks the confidence and self-assurance of our Shinichi who takes pride in the truth. Rather, this one is more afraid and saddened by it and is mocked for his bluntness. That's why this new world's Kaito never heard much of this Shinichi too, because he's not featured in the news for solving cases, but he's been ostracized for it. I just love the idea of how different people could turn out to be with just a change of perspective. This Shinichi is still observant and cares for people's safety, but because of how he was viewed as a negative instead of a positive, in this world, his strengths became a weakness and what attracted our thief Kaito never got to shine. Changing their meeting and this Shinichi's personality instead to meek and lonely. Not as driven and assertive.
Last time I checked, it's not finished, but that's fine. I love the concept too much! My biggest fear is that it's been deleted.

Do you think Inspector Nakamori or Aoko might have enemies for "hating" kaito kid?
I was thinking this after remembering a fanfic I read where people believed that Aoko and Kid were in a romantic relationship and people divided into two sides, first the people who loved the ship and second those who hated the thought that Kid had bride and this made me think that canonically in both detective conan and magic kaito, kid is like a kind of idol because we already see that he has many fans who even go to his robberies, I wouldn't be surprised if there is merchandise. which has kaito kid as the main image.
When I thought about that I couldn't help but think that like every fandom, Kaito Kid's would not be saved from having a toxic side which has its hate forums towards Inspector Nakamori or also towards the other police officers who work in the anti-robbery section that He specializes in arresting the Phantom Thief, although I feel that the person who would receive the most hate would be Ginzo since he has been wanting to arrest Kaito Kid for years.
since he only cares about arresting Kid, would go for someone more vulnerable like teenage daughter of the insector, but I feel like those people The desire to bully her wouldn't last long. Because I think Aoko would not be a girl who would hide, I feel if they attacked her on social media at first she would respond but then she would block them and if those people attack her in person they would know the wrath of Aoko's mop.
Although I feel like kaito couldn't help Aoko much either as a child or as kaito kuroba, I feel like he would protect her anonymously by leaving her nice encouraging messages on a fake social media account and defending her from haters who always look for ways to harass her either because he "accidentally" got a magic trick wrong or because on his fake account he defends her from bad comments I know kaito sometimes makes fun of Aoko and inspector nakamori but even he has limits and the people who harass Aoko passed those limits.

For the ask game thing, J K R X!
Hoooh? You're approaching me? Well, if you dare...
J - what’s your favorite fanfic trope? Have you written it?
I ADORE A VERY SPECIFIC FLAVOR OF CANON REWRITES. Basically: what if canon but my blorbo was treated as the love interest (and all the cliches that come with that, yes, hello I love whump) and my ship is endgame?
Think literally just Crown. The entire concept came to me years ago because I wanted, so desperately, to see a world where Ed was basically treated as Ling's love interest. And how that would change the plot! How would their relationship develop? How would they act AFTER they're dating? Blorbo treated as love interest + established relationship MY FUCKING BELOVED.
I did it to Ed again with Reliable Conclusion; I did it long before that to Stiles with Sweet Disaster; and I've most definitely contemplated doing it to Shinichi in a kaishin "what if Shinichi played Aoko's role in Magic Kaito" au.
If this trope has no fans left, it's because I'm DEAD.
K - do you have a guilty pleasures in fic (reading or writing)?
Oh, dude, SO MANY. SO SO MANY. I've already said I like my favs being treated as love interests, so you can imagine all the "stupid cliche" positions that I like to write said favs into. I CAN'T HELP IT MAN. I know my blorbos are competent in canon, and I'll never erase that! Any "weak" situation I ever write them into HAS to make canonical sense to me, otherwise I just. I can't.
But also, what's wrong with a strong character needing to be saved? Ed, for example, altho yes yes he's disabled, is also just human. Even without his automail kicking his ass, as a human he can still inherently be weak! You just need to know where to apply that weakness!
Also I really like dressing my favs pretty, heh. I FIND THEM PRETTY AND THUS THEY DESERVE TO LOOK THE PRETTIEST. TIS THE LAW!!!
R - which writers (fanfic or otherwise) do you consider the biggest influence on you and your writing?
Right off the top of my head, SiryyGray from Capra comes to mind. The way they tied Ed's flashbacks into the narrative so time feels WACK. The way their writing style is so damn atmospheric and vintage somehow, like you're IN those 1940s with Ed. THE WAY THEY TIED THAT WHOLE BOY WITH A COMPASS STORY INTO THE LARGER NARRATIVE AND IT HELD THEMATIC MEANING? I ATE THAT SHIT UP.
Their writing style definitely directly influenced mine! Honestly, I've caught myself thinking back on Capra a lot whenever I'm trying to write certain scenes in my own fics.
I can also cite The Map to Everywhere book series (highly recommend) as direct inspo that taught me to just, have FUN with formatting! Even in a published book! That series is my favorite in the whole world and it has so much fun with its visuals and formatting! I really admire it.
X - how would you categorize your fanfic reading? Are you a voracious reader? Do you carefully pick and choose? Something in between?
Oh, god no, I am DEFINITELY picky. Like, "I'm striving to become a professional literary editor" picky. I try so hard but unless your premise is EXTREMELY captivating and ticks all my trope boxes, then even slightly mediocre writing will turn me off at times. I can't unsee if there's a dialogue tag every single line; if the punctuation's bad; if two characters speak in the same paragraph. Every fanfic pet peeve you can think of, I've clicked off a fic from.
It's unfortunate, because I remember being 12 and reading every cool sounding fic I could get my hands on. But my writing's evolved a lot over the years. And so have my expectations for fics because of that. It's not rlly sth I can turn off in my brain anymore, as much as I wish I could sometimes.
